Darwinia and William Fong are both longterm Territorians whose families arrived in the 1800s during the building of the railway and the gold rush period in the Pine Creek region. At the time of Cyclone Tracy they were in the home on land they had bought on East Point Road in 1948. The home, which William and a friend built over a period of years, was badly damaged in the cyclone and Darwinia was seriously injured in the storm and evacuated, along with her daughter, immediately after the cyclone. William, a keen photographer, stayed in Darwin and took many photographs of post cyclone damage, some of which are shown on this site. Their interview includes a description of the night of the cyclone and the aftermath, both from Darwinia's evacuation experience, and from William's experience of staying to rebuild the house. The night of the Cyclone - A descrition of how they survived the cylcone and where they sheltered. Evacuation after the cyclone - A desription of how Darwinia Fong was evacuated to Sydney, treated and returned to Darwin. Rebuilding the House - A description of how long it took to rebuild the house and how they lived in the mean time. The Chinese Temple - A description of how the Chinese temple and hall was destroyed and later rebuilt. |
