Permit system an audio interview with Joe Karlhuber

Joe Karlhuber came to the Territory in 1958 from Western Australia where he had been freelancing as a photographer. After a short time working for the Commonwealth Government in Darwin, he opened a photographic studio in the inner Darwin suburb of Parap. In 1960, when the credit squeeze took its toll on small business, he joined the Northern Territory News as chief photographer and worked there until 1972, covering some of the major events of Territory life during that time. When he left the newspaper he bought the photographic studios of Lillian Dean, a longtime Territory photographer, and set up business in Knucky Street. He currently owns a business in the CBD. At the time of Cyclone Tracy Joe and his family were in Germany but returned to Darwin as soon as possible after getting the news of the cyclone. Joe was hired by the Housing Commission to photograph the damage caused to Housing Commission houses in the immediate aftermath of the cyclone. His interview overs the observations he made during this time and also includes descriptions of his own house and business.
